Outdoor Learning

outdoor learning for KS2

Palaeoquest is based on a love of Natural History and Earth Sciences.  The aim has always been to bring nature into your classroom, where it is not possible for you to access it yourselves. To take these activities outdoors into the fresh air is a joy. Even if it's just a visit to a mock-up archaeological dig, or rock face, in  your own playground, outdoor learning and outdoor classrooms still enhance pupils' appreciation for the natural world and make the activity more memorable.

Outdoor Learning

In these times of Covid 19, outdoor activities have become increasing popular. Most Palaeoquest workshops can be taken outdoors to allow for greater social distancing and virus-related safety - as well as the other benefits of taking children outdoors! In addition, we have some workshops that are specifically designed to be done outdoors. Of course, individual school's facilities may not allow for outdoor learning, but we will work with you to try to enable this as far as is possible. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Dinosaur Escape Room

Dinosaur escape room activity

Visit the different dino-related puzzle-stations and try to solve the clues to help you "escape". Real fossils, rocks and dinosaur replicas are used.

Can be done indoors or as outdoor learning.

Evolution Adventure

Rocks and fossils challenge activity

A mix of Earth Science activities are combined into an exciting and informative challenge day for your class, either as outdoor learning or indoors. Indoors, this will be set up like a lab, outdoors it will involve more physical activity and will have the feel of a field trip in your school grounds.

Evolution Adventure

Evolution Adventure

Evolution Adventure

fossil puzzle activity for schools

Discover the history of life on Earth right at the "rock-face". Visit a mock-up of rock strata (in your playground or hall) containing specific fossils in each layer, in the order in which they evolved. Record your data like a real palaeontologist. Then, make the most of your outdoor learning opportunity and choose from several active games (set up in your playground, field or hall), all demonstrating different aspects of Evolution and Inheritance: Walk the Time-line to discover how many generations ago some of these creatures lived - including your own ancestors, play the Blobby Evolution Game and try to "evolve" yourselves (it's not as easy as you think), or try the "Natural Selection Challenge". The workshop ends with a Q and A session with Dr Helen.
